We have begun to emerge from this Covid controlled year. The evidence is in the stores on the waterfront street now opening and the street hawkers out bothering strolling tourists. A couple of weeks ago, the streets and restaurants were very busy as Semana Santa–EASTER–week was upon us. During the week prior to Easter, many Mexican Nationals have their annual holiday. The ferries were over crowded as families and individuals arrived from the mainland. The Marina was busy and the boat traffic on the waters was exciting. Everything almost felt normal again. If it had not been for the temperatures taken, hand sanitizer given and of course mask wearing, one could almost believe that it was normal. However the fact remains that we–all of us here and at home–should still be governed by the Covid rules. With the vaccinations nearing 40% of all Americans and the vaccine being dispensed here on the Island, we begin to feel safer. This weekend vaccinations here on the Isle are available for 50 year old and above.
In a week we are going to see the first of “THE USUAL SUSPECTS”. This is a group of divers who over many years have come to know each other and make a couple of treks to Cozumel to dive. It is very close to a family reunion. Not quite sure of the number, but probably over 15-20 suspects will be arriving during the next three weeks. Most all of them have waited to be vaccinated before traveling. It will be a fun few weeks as we get to see old friends and catch up on how they spent their Covid year.
AIRLINE PRICES INCREASE
The one benefit of the Covid era was the low cost of flights to the Island. Now as things progress back towards a more normal time, the price of flights has gone up. One can hardly blame the airlines as they were devastated by the non travel rules and a public fearful of flying in an enclosed space. These days flights are arriving at near capacity.
Delta Airlines has canceled all flights to the Island. They pulled all of their staff at the start of the Covid a year ago and in explicitly have not seemed it profitable to return direct flights to Cozumel. They do however continue to fly to Cancun. On the other hand there are new direct flights arriving to the Island. Check your schedule for direct flight from Denver, Minneapolis, Charlotte, Miami, and Dallas. There may be other starting points, so research your best means to travel to Cozumel. South West is new coming here and I believe also Sun Jet. Not sure that is correct, so do your due diligence to get the best fares that you can find.
HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS
There are still very good prices for hotels and the restaurants. The new thing is Air B&B’s We get lots of requests for information about these, but they are not included in our inventory of reservations. Just use your internet skills to search out one that you might like.
